How to register a Canadian car at Massachusetts

To register a Canadian car at Massachusetts, you need the following 5 paperwork.

1. A letter from manufacturer stating the vehicle meets safety and emmision standards
2. Custom form ( retrieve from the entry custom )
3. Photo ID ( license and Passport )
4. Registration of Canada or Title
5. RMV1 form with insurance stamp and agent's signature. ( That means you need get an auto insurance before register the car )

To get a letter from manufacturer
Mine is Volkswagen, they need you to provide the following information:
1. Registration and
2. The Engine Family Number and
3. the reason why you need this letter.
need 7-10 work days

If you forget the custom form, and you still can get it locally by contact the local registry office.


The following information was got from MA registry office

In order to apply for your registration and title transaction, please submit the following documents to your local full service RMV office:

1.) A completed RMV-1 Application (insurance stamp and agent's signature is required)
2.) Your original certificate of title or sufficient proof of ownership for your vehicle if title exempt
3.) MVU-29 Sales Tax Exemption Form
4.) $50.00 title fee and the new registration fee (Money order, cash or check only)
5.) Original U.S. Custom's Entry Form from the U.S. Customs Office

Please Note: Acceptable "proof of ownership" would be:
- Original Certificate of Title in the owner/seller's name
- The owner/seller's current or last known Registration Certificate
- Copy of the owner/seller's current or last known City or Town Excise bill
- The owner/seller's Sales Tax Receipt from the Department of Revenue (DOR)

Registration fees are determined by the type of registration plate you wish to have on your vehicle. After completing the transaction, you will receive a new registration certificate in your name, new plates and ayear of expiration decal for the rear plate over the counter. The title will be processed and mailed in approximately six (6) to eight (8) weeks. If you have a loan on the vehicle, the title will be maileddirectly to the lienholder listed on the RMV-1 Application. You must obtain a Massachusetts vehicle inspection within seven (7) days of the registration date.
